About this butterfly
The Peacock is named for the four large eyespots on a rich reddish-brown ground. The underside is dark and leaf-like, hiding the butterfly at rest. Adults overwinter in buildings, hollow trees and other shelters, and they are among the first butterflies of spring. They visit gardens, meadows and woodland edges for nectar. Buddleia, thistles and similar flowers are often used. Eggs are laid in clusters on nettle. The butterfly is still widespread in much of Europe. Territorial adults may defend a sunny perch. A sudden flash of eyespots can startle a bird. Dark hibernating individuals are easily mistaken for dead leaves.
