About this butterfly
The Marbled White is a medium-sized butterfly named for its black-and-white chequered wings. It flies in June, July and August on unimproved grassland, often on calcareous soils. Adults take nectar especially from knapweeds and thistles. They flutter low over the sward in sunshine. The species is widespread in much of central and southern Europe. Colonies persist where meadows are grazed or cut traditionally. Intensive fertiliser and ploughing remove both nectar and larval grasses. Males are more conspicuous; females spend more time in taller grass. Warm, flower-rich slopes suit it better than closed woodland or ryegrass leys.
